Non-surgical facial contouring, jawline definition and skin tightening
Loss of face definition is a natural part of the ageing process. Over time, the skin, facial fat pads, muscles and underlying bone gradually lose support. This can make the face look softer, less lifted and less defined.
You may notice that the jawline becomes less sharp, the cheeks look flatter, the lower face feels heavier, or the overall facial shape looks less youthful.
At Skin and Scar Care Clinic, we offer advanced, medical-led treatments designed to improve facial definition, restore natural contours and support skin firmness without surgery.
Our personalised approach focuses on balanced, natural-looking rejuvenation rather than changing your unique facial features.
What is loss of face definition?
Loss of face definition means the natural contours of the face become softer or less visible.
This may affect:
- Jawline definition
- Cheek contour
- Chin and lower-face profile
- Facial oval shape
- Neck and jawline transition
- Temple and midface support
- Skin firmness
- Overall facial balance
Clients often describe this as:
- “My face looks less defined”
- “My jawline has disappeared”
- “My cheeks look flatter”
- “My face looks tired”
- “My lower face looks heavier”
- “My skin feels looser”
- “My face has lost its shape”
- “I look older after weight loss”
The right treatment depends on whether the concern is caused by skin laxity, volume loss, fat changes, tissue descent, weak chin projection, collagen loss or a combination.
What causes loss of face definition?
Natural ageing
As we age, the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid gradually declines. This reduces skin firmness, hydration and elasticity.
The skin becomes less able to hold facial contours, and the face may start to look softer or less structured.
Loss of facial volume
Facial fat pads, bone support and soft tissues naturally change with age. The cheeks, temples, under-eye area and jawline may lose support.
This can lead to:
- Flattened cheeks
- Hollow temples
- Under-eye shadows
- Jowls
- Poor jawline definition
- Lower-face heaviness
Skin laxity
As the skin becomes less elastic, facial tissues can descend. This softens the jawline and changes the youthful facial oval.
Skin laxity is often most visible around the:
- Lower cheeks
- Jawline
- Jowls
- Neck
- Under-chin area
Weight changes
Significant weight loss or weight gain can affect facial structure.
Weight loss, including after Ozempic®, Wegovy® or Mounjaro® journeys, can reduce facial fat and support. This may create hollow cheeks, loose skin and a less defined jawline.
Weight gain can also create fullness under the chin, in the lower face or around the jawline.
Sun damage
Long-term UV exposure accelerates collagen breakdown and premature ageing. It can cause wrinkles, pigmentation, skin thinning and loss of firmness.
Genetics
Some people naturally have softer facial contours, a weaker jawline, flatter cheeks or earlier skin laxity due to inherited facial anatomy.
Lifestyle factors
Smoking, poor nutrition, dehydration, stress, lack of sleep and poor sun protection can all contribute to collagen loss and premature facial ageing.
Hormonal changes
Menopause and hormonal changes can affect collagen, skin thickness, hydration and elasticity. This can make facial definition reduce more quickly.

Recommended treatments for loss of face definition
Endolift® for jawline, jowls and lower-face definition
Endolift® is one of our main treatments for improving facial definition, especially around the jawline, jowls, lower face and neck.
It is a minimally invasive laser treatment that works beneath the skin using a very fine fibre. The laser energy stimulates collagen remodelling, tissue tightening and selected fat reduction.
Endolift® may help improve:
- Jawline laxity
- Jowls
- Lower-face heaviness
- Double chin
- Neck laxity
- Skin tightening
- Facial contour
- Mild to moderate sagging
- Soft tissue heaviness after weight change
Endolift® is particularly useful where the face has lost definition because of a combination of skin laxity and soft tissue heaviness.
What to expect with Endolift®
Treatment is usually performed under local anaesthetic. Swelling, bruising, tenderness, tightness or temporary numbness may occur.
Results develop gradually. Some improvement may be visible within weeks, but the main result usually develops over 3–6 months as collagen remodelling continues.
Important limitation
Endolift® is not a replacement for a surgical facelift or neck lift. It is most suitable for mild to moderate laxity. Severe skin excess or advanced facial sagging may require surgical assessment.
HIFU for selected mild facial laxity
HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, is a non-invasive treatment that uses focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen in the deeper support layers of the skin.
HIFU may help improve:
- Mild facial laxity
- Early jawline softening
- Mild cheek descent
- Subtle skin tightening
- Early jowls
- Mild neck laxity
- Early loss of facial definition
HIFU is best suited to clients with mild laxity, good skin quality and realistic expectations.
When HIFU may be preferred
HIFU may be suitable if you want a non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime and your concern is early loss of definition rather than significant sagging.
When HIFU may not be enough
HIFU is usually less suitable for:
- Severe jowls
- Heavy lower-face sagging
- Significant loose skin
- Marked neck laxity
- Prominent fat under the chin
- Very thin faces with poor volume support
- Clients expecting a surgical-level lift
In these cases, Endolift®, injectables or surgical referral may be more appropriate.
Bioremodelling injections for skin quality and elasticity
Bioremodelling injections are designed to improve skin hydration, elasticity and firmness.
At Skin and Scar Care Clinic, this may include treatments such as Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator, Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator Structura or other suitable regenerative injectable treatments, depending on your assessment.
Bioremodelling may help improve:
- Thin or crepey skin
- Loss of elasticity
- Dull skin
- Early skin laxity
- Mild facial ageing
- Skin hydration
- Skin firmness
- Post-weight-loss skin quality
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator is commonly used to improve hydration, skin quality and elasticity. It is helpful where the skin looks tired, thin or crepey.
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator Structura
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator Structura may be considered where facial definition has reduced because of soft tissue support loss or cheek hollowing, especially after weight loss or ageing.
It is not a traditional filler. It works more subtly to support tissue quality and improve the appearance of facial hollowing and mild laxity.
Treatment course
A course of 2 sessions, usually spaced around 4 weeks apart, is commonly recommended.
Biostimulating injections for collagen support
Biostimulating injections are injectable treatments that encourage the body to produce collagen gradually.
These may include:
- PLLA
- CaHA
- Other suitable collagen-stimulating treatments
They may be useful when facial definition has reduced due to collagen loss, skin laxity or soft tissue support changes.
Biostimulators may help improve:
- Facial firmness
- Skin thickness
- Mild volume loss
- Lower-face support
- Cheek support
- Jawline definition
- Skin quality
- Gradual facial rejuvenation
PLLA
PLLA is a collagen-stimulating injectable that works gradually over several months. It may be useful for general facial hollowing, cheek support and soft tissue restoration.
CaHA
CaHA can provide structural support and stimulate collagen. Depending on dilution and technique, it may be used for contour support or skin-quality improvement.
Important note
Biostimulators are not simply reversible like hyaluronic acid fillers. They must be planned carefully, conservatively and according to facial anatomy.
Other evidence-based treatments for loss of facial definition
Dermal fillers for structural support
Carefully placed hyaluronic acid dermal fillers may help restore structure in selected areas such as the:
- Cheeks
- Chin
- Jawline
- Temples
- Pre-jowl area
Fillers can improve facial balance and support, but they must be used carefully. Overfilling can make the face look heavy, puffy or unnatural.
Dermal fillers may be particularly useful when facial definition is reduced due to volume loss or weak structural support.
Chin projection and profile balancing
The chin plays an important role in lower-face definition.
A recessed or under-projected chin can make the jawline look weaker and the neck look fuller. Chin filler may help improve:
- Side profile
- Chin projection
- Jawline transition
- Lower-face balance
- Double-chin appearance caused by weak chin support
Chin filler does not tighten skin or remove fat, but it can improve the overall harmony of the lower face.
CO₂ laser for wrinkles and skin texture
CO₂ laser can improve skin texture, fine lines, wrinkles and crepey skin.
It may be useful when loss of definition is associated with:
- Wrinkles
- Photoageing
- Crepey lower-face skin
- Neck wrinkles
- Upper-lip lines
- Poor skin texture
CO₂ laser does not replace lifting or volume support, but it can be an excellent finishing treatment for skin quality.
Erbium Glass laser for collagen stimulation
Erbium Glass 1550 nm laser is a non-ablative fractional laser that stimulates collagen with less downtime than CO₂ laser.
It may help improve:
- Fine lines
- Texture
- Mild laxity
- Pores
- Skin quality
- Early ageing
- Collagen support
