Treatments for Loose, Wrinkled and Ageing Tummy Skin
Crepey abdominal skin describes skin that appears thin, finely wrinkled, loose or crumpled, sometimes resembling crepe paper. It may develop after pregnancy, weight loss, ageing, hormonal changes or long-term stretching of the abdominal skin.
Some patients mainly notice fine wrinkles around the belly button, while others experience loose lower-abdominal skin, stretch marks, uneven texture or a combination of skin laxity and localised fat.
At Skin and Scar Care Clinic in Altrincham, we offer personalised, medically led treatments for crepey and loose abdominal skin. Depending on your anatomy and treatment goals, your plan may include:
- Endolift® abdominal skin tightening
- Fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing
- Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body injections
- Diluted or hyperdiluted calcium hydroxylapatite injections
- Erbium Glass 1550 nm fractional laser
- Thulium 1927 nm fractional laser
- A staged combination of skin tightening, injectable and laser treatments
The most appropriate option depends on whether your main concern is skin laxity, wrinkles, stretch marks, pigmentation, localised fat or loss of dermal support.
What Causes Crepey Abdominal Skin?
Crepey skin usually develops because of several contributing factors rather than one single cause.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, the abdominal skin stretches to accommodate the growing uterus. Collagen and elastin fibres may become stretched or disrupted, resulting in:
- Loose skin
- Fine wrinkles
- Stretch marks
- Changes around the belly button
- Reduced skin elasticity
- Separation or weakness of the abdominal muscles
The degree of change varies according to genetics, age, skin quality, the number of pregnancies and the amount of stretching.
Weight Loss
Significant or rapid weight loss may reduce the volume beneath the abdominal skin faster than the skin can contract.
This may leave:
- Loose or hanging skin
- Fine, crumpled wrinkles
- An empty or deflated appearance
- Skin folds around the lower abdomen
- More visible stretch marks
The likelihood of persistent loose skin may be greater after substantial weight loss or when the skin has been stretched for many years.
Natural Ageing
Collagen, elastin, hyaluronic acid and natural skin oils gradually decline with age. The skin consequently becomes thinner, drier and less able to return to its original position after stretching.
Sun and Environmental Damage
Although the abdomen is usually less exposed than the face or hands, repeated sun exposure can still contribute to pigmentation, collagen breakdown and reduced elasticity.
Hormonal Changes
Menopause and other hormonal changes can affect collagen production, hydration, fat distribution and skin thickness.
Genetics
Some people naturally have thinner skin, reduced elasticity or a greater tendency to develop stretch marks and laxity.
Previous Surgery and Scarring
Abdominal surgery, Caesarean-section scars and other injuries can tether the skin to deeper tissues. A tight or indented scar may create a bulge or overhang above or below the scar.
Scar tethering, skin laxity and underlying fat may all require separate assessment and may not respond equally to the same treatment.
Lifestyle Factors
Smoking, repeated weight fluctuations, poor nutrition, dehydration and inadequate sun protection may contribute to premature skin ageing and reduced healing capacity.
Is the Bulge Caused by Skin, Fat or the Abdominal Wall?
Not every abdominal bulge is caused by loose skin or superficial fat.
A prominent or persistent abdominal bulge may also relate to:
- Diastasis recti, or separation of the abdominal muscles
- An abdominal or umbilical hernia
- Visceral fat surrounding the internal organs
- Bloating or gastrointestinal conditions
- Postoperative weakness
- Scar tethering
- Changes in posture
Aesthetic treatments such as Endolift®, laser resurfacing and injectable biostimulators do not repair a hernia, correct significant muscle separation or remove visceral fat.
A face-to-face examination may therefore be required before recommending treatment. Patients with pain, a firm or enlarging lump, vomiting, bowel symptoms or a bulge that cannot be reduced should seek appropriate medical assessment.
Treatments for Crepey Abdominal Skin
Endolift® for Abdominal Skin Tightening
Endolift® is a minimally invasive laser treatment performed using a very fine optical fibre placed beneath the skin.
The 1470 nm laser energy is delivered within the superficial subcutaneous tissue to create controlled heating. Depending on the treatment plan, Endolift® may be used to support tissue contraction, collagen remodelling and reduction of selected areas of superficial fat.
Research into subdermal 1470 nm laser treatment has reported changes in dermal thickness, collagen organisation and elastin at appropriate energy levels. However, available Endolift® evidence includes small studies, observational reports and studies with variable protocols. Larger controlled trials are still required, particularly for body indications.
Endolift® may be considered for:
- Mild to moderate abdominal skin laxity
- Crepey or wrinkled lower-abdominal skin
- Loose skin around the belly button
- Mild to moderate superficial fat
- Reduced abdominal definition
- Skin laxity following pregnancy
- Skin laxity following stable weight loss
- Irregular contour around a tethered scar
- Patients seeking more tightening than surface laser treatment alone may provide
What Endolift® does not treat
Endolift® is not designed to correct:
- Severe excess or hanging skin
- A large abdominal apron
- Significant muscle separation
- Abdominal wall weakness
- Hernias
- Visceral fat
- Severe obesity
- Large quantities of deep fat
- Major postoperative deformity
Patients with severe excess skin may require assessment for surgical options such as abdominoplasty. Endolift® should not be presented as an alternative to surgery where skin removal or muscle repair is required.
Endolift® treatment timeline
Endolift® is commonly performed as a single initial procedure.
Some tightening may become noticeable during the early recovery period, but improvement generally develops progressively as swelling settles and tissue remodelling takes place.
A typical timeline may include:
- First week: swelling, bruising, tenderness and temporary irregularity
- Four to eight weeks: early contour and tightening changes become easier to assess
- Three to six months: progressive collagen remodelling and skin contraction
- Six to twelve months: final improvement may continue to develop
- Review: additional treatment may be considered if clinically appropriate
The degree and speed of improvement vary considerably between patients.
Endolift® downtime
Temporary effects may include:
- Swelling
- Bruising
- Tenderness
- Tightness
- Numbness or altered sensation
- Small entry-point marks
- Temporary contour irregularity
- Fluid leakage from entry points
- Mild discomfort with movement
Compression garments or lymphatic drainage may be recommended depending on the treatment area and clinical assessment.
Endolift® risks
Although serious complications are uncommon when treatment is performed appropriately, recognised risks include:
- Infection
- Burns or thermal injury
- Persistent numbness
- Skin irregularity
- Asymmetry
- Seroma or fluid collection
- Prolonged swelling
- Scarring
- Pigmentation changes
- Injury to surrounding structures
- An unsatisfactory or insufficient result
Careful patient selection and appropriate energy delivery are essential because excessive thermal energy may damage rather than improve collagen and elastin structures.
Fractional CO₂ Laser for Crepey Abdominal Skin
Fractional CO₂ laser is an ablative resurfacing treatment that creates controlled microscopic columns in the skin.
The healing response stimulates epidermal renewal and dermal remodelling. CO₂ laser treatment is generally more intensive than non-ablative Erbium Glass or Thulium treatment and is associated with greater downtime.
A recent split-abdomen study found that adding fractional CO₂ treatment improved outcomes in postpartum abdominal laxity compared with the comparator treatment alone. Fractional CO₂ laser has also demonstrated benefits for abdominal stretch-mark texture, although no treatment completely removes stretch marks.
CO₂ laser may be considered for:
- Moderate crepey texture
- Fine and deeper abdominal wrinkles
- Stretch marks
- Rough or uneven skin
- Certain surgical scars
- Thin, atrophic-looking skin
- Sun-damaged or unevenly pigmented skin
- Final surface refinement following deeper tightening treatment
CO₂ laser is less suitable for:
- Significant excess skin requiring removal
- Large or deep fat deposits
- Muscle separation or hernia
- Patients unable to accept several days of visible recovery
- Patients with impaired healing
- Patients with a high risk of pigmentation changes unless carefully selected and prepared
Typical CO₂ laser course
Depending on the severity of the concern and treatment intensity:
- One to three sessions may be recommended
- Sessions are generally separated by approximately eight to twelve weeks or longer
- Lighter treatments may require more sessions
- More intensive treatments usually require longer recovery
CO₂ laser recovery timeline
- Days 1–3: redness, swelling, warmth and sensitivity
- Days 3–10: crusting, dryness, bronzing or peeling
- One to three weeks: gradual settling of redness and sensitivity
- Four to twelve weeks: early texture improvement
- Three to six months: continued collagen remodelling
Recovery may be longer following intensive treatment or treatment of a large surface area.
Fractional CO₂ treatment has a greater risk of downtime and pigmentation change than non-ablative fractional lasers. Conservative settings and careful aftercare are particularly important when treating the body or darker skin types.
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body for Crepey Abdominal Skin
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment designed to improve skin hydration, elasticity and overall tissue quality rather than provide the projection associated with conventional dermal fillers.
It contains hybrid cooperative complexes of high- and low-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid. The product is placed at selected points beneath the skin, where it spreads through the surrounding tissue.
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body may help improve:
- Mild crepey skin
- Dehydrated or thin skin
- Early abdominal laxity
- Fine wrinkles
- Dull skin quality
- Reduced elasticity
- Skin quality following weight loss or pregnancy
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body is not designed to:
- Remove fat
- correct significant overhanging skin
- Repair abdominal muscles
- Treat a hernia
- Replace an abdominoplasty
- Provide substantial volume correction
- Remove stretch marks completely
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body treatment timeline
A typical initial programme may include:
- Two treatment sessions
- Approximately four weeks between sessions
- Review after the initial course
- Maintenance treatment when clinically appropriate
Expected changes usually develop gradually:
- First few days: temporary injection points, swelling or bruising
- Four to eight weeks: improved hydration and early skin-quality changes
- Eight to twelve weeks: elasticity and firmness may become more noticeable
- Maintenance: frequency depends on skin condition, age and treatment response
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body side effects
Expected temporary effects may include:
- Small raised injection points
- Redness
- Tenderness
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Itching
Calcium Hydroxylapatite Injections for Abdominal Skin Laxity
Calcium hydroxylapatite, commonly shortened to CaHA, is an injectable biostimulatory product.
When diluted or hyperdiluted, CaHA can be spread across a broader treatment area to support collagen and elastin remodelling rather than primarily adding volume.
A small abdominal study reported a measurable increase in dermal thickness following a single treatment with diluted CaHA. Consensus publications also describe its use for body areas including the abdomen, upper arms, thighs and buttocks.
Use of CaHA for abdominal biostimulation is generally an off-label treatment. This should be explained during consultation and documented as part of the consent process.
Diluted or hyperdiluted CaHA may be considered for:
- Mild to moderate abdominal skin laxity
- Thin or crepey skin
- Reduced firmness
- Fine wrinkles
- Reduced dermal thickness
- Skin requiring structural biostimulation
- Patients who have reached a stable weight
- Combination treatment following Endolift®
CaHA is not suitable for:
- Large areas of hanging skin
- Significant fat reduction
- Hernia or muscle separation
- Patients seeking immediate surgical-level tightening
- Areas with active infection
- Patients with a known allergy to the product or its components
CaHA treatment timeline
A personalised programme may involve:
- One initial session
- Review after approximately eight to twelve weeks
- A second treatment if clinically indicated
- Maintenance treatment according to skin quality and response
Improvement is gradual because the principal aim is tissue biostimulation:
- Days 1–7: swelling, tenderness and bruising
- Four to eight weeks: early changes in firmness
- Eight to sixteen weeks: more visible collagen-related improvement
- Several months: continued tissue remodelling
CaHA risks
Potential complications include:
- Bruising
- Swelling
- Pain
- Tenderness
- Induration
- Lumps or nodules
- Uneven product distribution
- Infection
- Inflammatory reactions
- Vascular injury
- Skin damage
- Scarring
- Unsatisfactory results
CaHA cannot be dissolved with hyaluronidase in the way that many hyaluronic acid fillers can. Treatment should therefore be performed by an experienced medical injector with appropriate knowledge of abdominal anatomy.
Erbium Glass 1550 nm Laser
The 1550 nm Erbium Glass laser is a non-ablative fractional laser. It creates controlled microscopic treatment zones within the dermis while leaving much of the skin surface intact.
It provides less aggressive resurfacing than fractional CO₂ laser and is therefore associated with less visible downtime, although a course of treatments is usually required.
Research comparing 1550 nm Erbium Glass with CO₂ laser for abdominal stretch marks found that both could improve clinical appearance and skin elasticity. The evidence for treating major abdominal skin laxity with Erbium Glass alone is more limited.
Erbium Glass laser may help improve:
- Fine abdominal wrinkles
- Mild crepey texture
- Stretch marks
- Superficial scars
- Uneven texture
- Mild collagen loss
- Patients who prefer less downtime than CO₂ resurfacing
What Erbium Glass laser cannot do
Erbium Glass laser cannot:
- Remove significant excess skin
- Reduce large fat deposits
- Repair muscle separation
- Treat a hernia
- Provide the same resurfacing effect as an intensive CO₂ treatment
- Completely remove mature stretch marks
Typical Erbium Glass timeline
- Three to six sessions may be recommended
- Sessions are usually separated by four to six weeks
- Early improvement may appear after several treatments
- Collagen remodelling can continue for three to six months
Expected recovery
Patients may experience:
- Redness
- Mild swelling
- Warmth
- Dryness
- Temporary roughness
- Bronzing
- Mild flaking
- Increased skin sensitivity
These effects usually settle more quickly than after CO₂ laser treatment.
Which Treatment Is Best for Crepey Abdominal Skin?
For loose skin with localised superficial fat
Endolift® may be considered when both laxity and superficial fat contribute to the abdominal contour.
For fine wrinkles and moderate crepey texture
Fractional CO₂ laser may provide more intensive surface remodelling.
For mild laxity and dehydrated skin
Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body may support hydration, elasticity and tissue quality.
For thin skin requiring biostimulation
Diluted or hyperdiluted CaHA may be recommended to support dermal thickness and firmness.
For stretch marks and mild textural irregularity
Erbium Glass 1550 nm or fractional CO₂ laser may be considered.
For severe excess skin
Non-surgical treatments may provide insufficient improvement. A surgical consultation may be more appropriate when skin removal or muscle repair is required.
Combination Treatment for the Abdomen
Crepey abdominal skin often involves several tissue layers. A single treatment may not address every concern.
A staged combination plan may include:
- Endolift® for deeper skin tightening and selected superficial fat.
- Bio Remodelling / Bio Stimulator® Body or hyperdiluted CaHA for hydration, dermal support and biostimulation.
- Fractional CO₂ laser for stronger resurfacing, wrinkles and stretch marks.
- Erbium Glass 1550 nm laser for gradual collagen remodelling with less downtime.
- Thulium 1927 nm laser for superficial pigmentation and skin tone.
Treatments may need to be separated by several weeks or months. The safest sequence depends on the condition of the skin, the treatment intensity and the injectable product being considered.

Disclaimer
Eyebrow droop treatments are medical aesthetic treatments and results vary between individuals. Treatment outcomes cannot be guaranteed.
Eyebrow droop may be caused by ageing, skin laxity, muscle imbalance, temple hollowing, genetics, previous treatment, eyelid skin excess or medical causes. A consultation is required to assess the true cause.
Endolift®, CO₂ laser, anti-wrinkle injections and temple bioremodelling can improve selected cases of mild to moderate eyebrow droop, brow heaviness, forehead wrinkles, skin laxity and upper-face ageing. However, they are not alternatives to surgical brow lift, upper blepharoplasty or oculoplastic surgery where significant brow descent, eyelid ptosis or excess skin is present.
Possible side effects include redness, swelling, bruising, tenderness, asymmetry, temporary brow heaviness, eyelid droop, headache, dry skin, crusting, pigmentation change, infection, delayed healing, scarring, incomplete improvement and the possible need for further treatment.
Rare but serious complications can occur with any treatment around the eyes. Please seek urgent medical help if you experience sudden drooping, vision changes, double vision, severe headache, facial weakness, severe pain, increasing swelling, skin colour change or signs of infection.
We always aim to provide 100% effort, but final results depend on anatomy, skin quality, muscle activity, degree of laxity, age, medical history, healing response, lifestyle factors and adherence to aftercare.
